Making Change one Material at a Time

Lower Cape News editorial staff

It might seem like one simple decision, but collectively our building and remodeling habits can change both the planet and our own wellness.

"I do believe in that sort of generation of momentum .. and that what you do does matter, very much."

What difference do building materials make?

As we celebrate Earth Day 2024, certified wellness architect Mary-Ann Agresti says it's time to ask questions about the building and remodeling materials we choose - and let those choices lead to a healthier future.

Are there sustainable options?

For the most common types of remodeling projects on Cape Cod - walls, floors, kitchen, bathrooms, and decks - material choice can make a difference for both planet and personal health. From zero VOC paints and adhesives to cork and marmoleum flooring to acetylated wood decks, sustainability is here ... we just need to proactively ask for it.

How do choices impact personal health?

Material choices impact human health - and since COVID, and increased awareness of indoor spaces and their impact on human well-being have led architects and designers to focus on the interaction of materials and wellness. The use of materials that off-gas VOCs and create side effects like headaches can easily be substituted for non-VOC options in product such as paint and adhesives. Sound absorbing materials and use of natural light can also create a healthier and less stressful human environment.

How do choices impact planetary health?

Material use decisions in building and remodeling impact the larger planet as well. For example, deck choice can ripple through to the rain forest destruction and flooring options can impact landfill use. Today's market offers options that deliver the same benefits - rot resistance, durability, or color choice for example, in more sustainable products.

What difference does one earth friendly decision make?

While one decision alone won't change the world, each decision aggregates to change vendor offerings and longer term trends; these in turn can impact our impact on the planet. Agresti also notes that each decision that increases the demand for these products helps increase their available to all and decreases their cost.
